Garage Doors – Wood, Vinyl, or Steel?

Three of the most common materials for garage doors and what considerations and factors you may consider when choosing one of them.

Wood Garage Doors

One reason you may choose a wooden garage door is that the grain of a wooden garage door is a classy touch for some homes, it often matches the style of the home.  Wood is customizable and can be made into any shape or sized garage.  Wood is also a bit more forgiving when it comes to damage.  It doesn’t dent, but it can still get crunched by a hit and crack and split.  When it comes to maintenance, wooden garage doors will require frequent repainting and humidity can cause issues as it can cause the wood to swell requiring bolt tightening and possible future issues.  When it comes to insulation, especially if you have an attached garage,  wood isn’t a very good insulator. Vinyl Garage Doors

Vinyl garage doors is very affordable and require less painting and maintenance.  It also resists rust and can resist dents and won’t split.  Vinyl garage doors are resistant to humidity swelling and warping.  Vinyl isn’t a very good insulator but vinyl doors can be purchased with built-in insulation.  One of the best things about Vinyl Garage doors is its weight is less and causes less stress on garage door openers and springs.

Steel Garage Doors

Steel Garage doors are easy to keep clean and have many options available.  They are pretty easy to maintain and humidity, hot and cold temps don’t damage the door.  They may not splint or crack, but can dent fairly easily.  Steel isn’t a great insulator but can be purchased with insulation added.
