Is your Garage door frozen to the ground? If you push the garage door button and it doesn’t open STOP!
With all the rain we are getting in Milwaukee and Greenfield. If we get a good freeze, your garage door can freeze to the ground quickly.
Don’t keep pushing the button, you can damage the door and the motor.
First, make sure that the garage door hasn’t been locked, check the interior slide lock and check for obstructions.
Second, disconnect the door from the motor by pulling the manual release cord and try lifting the door by hand to free up any weather seal or frosted sections.
Finally look for Ice build up at the bottom of the garage door. If you notice ice, the best way to unstick a frozen garage door is by using a blow dryer on low heat . Using salt is ok but keep in mind that it can corrode the bottom section of the door. Chipping it with an ice chipper may work, but remember that there is a chance that you may chip into the seal or accidentally damage the door.
Preventing your door from freezing to the ground
Silicone spray on the seal at the bottom can help keep it from freezing to the ground,
Sand, or cat litter, or oil dry under the length of the door can help.
Keeping the area in front of the door free of ice and snow as much as possible. It is recommended during a storm or freeze to open and close the garage door a few times during the day to help keeping it from freezing. But remember that it can freeze quickly so checking it regularly is still even more recommended.
